FB2 is one of the most convenient and universal book formats for reading on different devices. FB2 opens without problems under Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, and almost all e-readers. Therefore, the question often arises: how to convert a text file of a different format to FB2?

Doc2fb is a small program designed to convert .doc, .txt and .rtf files into fb2 format for readers. The program works on PC (Windows 2000/XP/Vista) and PDA. Provides the ability to work in batch mode. The interface language is Russian.

In order for the application to work, MS Word 2003 must be installed on the PC (this is a minimum). You must also have javascript with version no lower than 5 (it is included in IE).

The utility itself consists of an XSL script and a shell - an HTA application (this is an application that is executed using the browser; in fact, it is a script.)

The program has a simple and intuitive interface. What immediately catches your eye is that the program is designed for batch conversion: you can select not a specific file, but only a folder.

The utility is able to highlight chapters and subchapters, format text (italics and bold), links and footnotes, and can also add pictures (for example, the first one as a cover).

Word vector images, for example, WMF, do not end up in the final file. Raster images that differ from the JPEG format are converted to PNG.

The utility menu consists of 3 items: “Files”, “Settings” and “Info”.

The “Files” item is intended to call the main working page of the shell (it is active immediately after launch). In the “Folder” line, you need to click on the button with the “>>” image, and then select the folder that contains the necessary DOC files. After this, the “convert” button becomes active.

Click on it and voila, the files are quickly converted to FB2.

The progress of the operation will be displayed in the “Log” area, located under the “convert” button.

The Doc2fb program settings are very few.

Namely: “Show MS Word during conversion”, “Close doc2fb after conversion”, and also “Delete empty lines” - the purpose of these options is clear without any explanation.

“Replace Line-break with Paragraph-break” - replaces forced line break codes with paragraph end codes.

What is a forced line break? With this function, the current line is broken, and the text continues in the next line. Suppose, for example, that the paragraph style includes an indent before the first line. To avoid the appearance of an indent before a short line of text (for example, in writing an address, or in a poem), you need to start a new line each time, and instead of pressing the ENTER key, you just need to insert a forced line break.

“Define footnotes as”, as well as “Define explanations as” - MS Word, before converting to FB2, converts those described by regular expressions () into footnotes and explanations.

“Save changes as document version” - changes are made to the document during conversion. If this option is enabled, these changes will be saved in the document as an edit version.

The scourge of the software described above is excessive independence, which manifested itself here too. Verses that use indentation are identified as quotations, and two-line headings are automatically given two sections, etc.

In general, the program fully meets its purpose. Despite some self-will, it allows you to quickly convert a fairly large number of files.

You have a document or book in DOS format, but you can’t or don’t want to read the contents - it’s much more convenient for you in fb2. This means that it needs to be transformed - converted.

Below I will describe the two best (it seems to me) ways to convert doc to fb2. DOS is a Microsoft 2003 format. In 2007, 2010 and 2013, docx began to be used.

You can convert it to fb2 using programs or using online servers. In the latter case, there must always be Internet access; in the former, only the installed program.

In general, it is not necessary to unnecessarily convert a doc format to another (in our case, fb2), even if you do not have the Microsoft Word program (it is paid).

You can use free analogues for reading: OpenOffice, Cool Reader or Doc Reader (there are more), but this article is about converting it to fb2, so let’s move on to the direct conversion

How to convert doc to fb2 using programs

There are several programs for converting documents (books) in doc format to fb2. My favorite was "htmlDocs2fb2".

First, download it - it is free and has Russian language (easy to find on your own). The installation is normal. After launch, turn on the Russian language.

To do this, click on the last option “common settings” at the top and select “Russisn” as shown below.

Next, close the program and run it again. Click the file at the top (place your dos document on the desktop ahead of time so as not to search for a long time), click “open”, find your file (which needs to be converted to another format), select it and click “open” at the bottom.

Your file in dos format will appear in the program window. To convert, click on the top of the file again and click on the convert option.

The program converts it. You just need to click “OK”. That's all. Now the book in fb2 format is on your desktop, you can start reading

Convert doc to fb2 online

You can also convert dos to fb2 formats using online services. It's not faster or better, but you don't need to install programs, and not all devices support them, for example, Android tablets.

But finding them on the Internet turned out to be not easy, and those that are found can infect your computer with a virus, or install a lot of unnecessary and completely unnecessary things. My document converted from fb2 to Word looks like this. The pictures remained in place, as did the text. The indents between paragraphs have disappeared and the spacing between lines has changed, but this is easy to fix.

Changing the extension

If you don't want to use online services, then there is another option. To do this, we will have to change the extension of the document we need and copy all its contents.

Look, if there is no “.fb2” after the name, then click in Explorer.

In the list that opens, select "Folder and Search Options".

If Word 2016 is installed, then select “View” at the top, then the “Options” button, and in it the sub-item "Change folder and search options".

After this, an extension will be added to the name. Change "fb2" to "html".

Confirm this action in the next window.

By double-clicking on the file, it will open in the browser. Select all the text - press "Ctrl+A", and copy it - "Ctrl+C".

Create a new document in MS Word and paste text there - press “Ctrl+V”.

I still have paragraphs and indents, but no pictures.

Directly opening the desired file in Word

Instead of converting, you can use a generally simple method - open a document in fb2 format directly in Word. To do this, launch a text editor, select the “File” tab at the top, then the item.

If it opens via Protected View, then allow editing. After this, the page will look like the screenshot below. The text remains, but its formatting is lost, and the pictures are also missing.

To save the file, go to the first tab at the top and select .

Specify the folder on your computer where you want to place it, select “Word Document” in the “Type” field and click “Save”.

If you have chosen a new format, then confirm in the window that opens that you agree with all possible changes.

These are the ways you can convert a document in FB2 format to DOCX or DOC. Each of them has its own shortcomings, formatting is lost somewhere, pictures are lost somewhere. Choose the one that suits you best.
